“Down, Set, Hike!” – National Trails Day

On Saturday, June 2, come out to Spring Creek Prairie and celebrate National Trails Day® by taking a hike on the many trails that wind through our beautiful native grasslands. Just like at sporting events, tailgating will be allowed in the grassy area just east of the visitor center.

Weekend Wildflower Walk

Start: 06/03/2012 – 3:30pm

End: 06/03/2012 – 4:30pm

Sunday, June 3, 3:30-4:30 p.m.

Kay Kottas will lead a walk to identify wildflowers. This is a great opportunity to see some native plants up close and learn how they may work in a home landscaping project. $6/adult, $4/children 12 and under.

Invasive Plant Species Roundup

Start: 06/09/2012 – 8:30am

End: 06/09/2012 – 12:00pm

Saturday, June 9, 8:30 a.m.-12:00 noon Join staff and other volunteers as we remove invasive musk thistles and other unwanted plants from the tallgrass prairie. All materials will be provided, but participants can bring their own shovel, gloves, and trash bags.

Saturday Early Bird Walk and Brunch

Migration should be in full flight in June, so join Kevin Poague, our resident birding expert, to explore the pond, prairie, and woodland habitats in search of those beautiful spring birds. After the walk, enoy a light brunch and conversation.

Firefly Picnic

Seek out fireflies and firefly habitat during this evening walk. Designed for children 3 through 8 years accompanied by an adult. $6/adult-child team, $2/extra team member. Sign up by June 22. (Another Firefly Picnic will be held Saturday, July 7.)

NABA Butterfly Count

Take part in the 37th annual butterfly count sponsored by the North American Butterfly Association. An experienced butterfly watcher will accompany each group. The count involves walking about 2 hours and covering 2 to 3 miles.

$5/adult, $2/each child under 12. To register, contact Pioneers Park Nature Center, 441-7895, before the July 13 deadline.

Nebraska Moth Night

Come explore the amazing diversity of moths at Nebraska Moth Night at Spring Creek Prairie. Hosted by the University of Nebraska-Lincoln Insect Science Club, the evening will focus on the wide range of moths that can be found in the state.

Nature Nightwatch

Start: 08/11/2012 – 9:00pm

Saturday, August 11, 9:00 p.m.-12:00 midnight

Venture out into Spring Creek Prairie’s special habitats insect repellent and red-tipped flashlights to sit quietly and await potential nighttime visitors as they go about their nocturnal activities. $10/adult, $7/each child 12 and under.

The Nature Conservancy

Platte Prairies Field Day

Calling all conservation professionals and amateur biologists of all ages!

Get an insider’s look at a Nebraska prairie! The Nature Conservancy, with support from Pheasants Forever, is hosting our first Platte Prairies Field Day! Spend a summer day learning from experts about bees, ants, spiders, reptiles/amphibians, and much more. Hike through grassland trails, learning about prairie restoration, fire/grazing management, wildlife management, and plant identification. Get familiar with the invasive species that are causing serious problems in our state. There will be kids’ hikes, too!

Come early and/or stay late and hike the trails on your own, if you like. Please be sure to dress for the heat and bring sunscreen. This event is free and open to the public, but please bring your own sack lunch and your own bottle – we’ll provide drinks.
