In 2003, The Nebraska Game and Parks Commission launched the Nebraska Natural Legacy Project to meet a requirement by Congress to develop a state-wide comprehensive wildlife conservation strategy. The Natural Legacy Project is providing a seat at the table for all interests to join forces and build an effective plan to conserve wildlife in Nebraska. The Southeast Nebraska Flagship Initiative was formed through the Nebraska Natural Legacy Project. It is a partnership of various conservation organizations whose purpose is to work colloaboratively on conservation within the Biologically -Unique Landscapes in southeastern Nebraska. Those partners include; Northern Prairies Land Trust, Spring Creek Prairie Audubon Center, The Nature Conservancy and The Nebraska Game & Parks Commission.
